Sociologists do not accept the validity of changes in rates of surplus value shown in the research on social classes, nor their relationships to strike activity. They offer a series of theoretical, methodological and empirical objections to rates and their relationships to strikes. In the present article, it has been shown that their critiques are largely invalid. After a series of fluctuations from the end of World War I to the midst of World War II, rates of surplus value accelerated sharply from early post-World War II until the mid- to late-1960s, followed by a stagnation or slump in the 1970s. This pattern is repeated in almost every western capitalist country for which data exists, as this review of the literature indicates. An acquaintance with this literature might have given critics some pause before they so completely rejected the author's conclusions because they did not fit well into the conventional sociological and economic argument that there has been little change over time in income distribution. It has also been shown in this paper that, contrary to critics, there is considerable empirical support for the hypothesis that rates of surplus value have a positive impact on strike activity in Canadian manufacturing between 1945 and 1966 and in the Canadian economy between 1961 and 1974.
